PJ

Hello, I moved back to India about 2.5 years ago! I'm originally from Delhi, but moved to Hyderabad directly from Seattle. We are a family of 5 (3 kids) :) and we are really enjoying having come back to India. We've faced a lot of challenges in trying to settle down and figure everything out as I spent most of my 15 year career in the US. But, my wife and kids are loving it here.

If anyone has questions or just concerns about coming back to India, please feel free to ping me and I'll try to answer to the best of my ability.

I (PJ, now Iconoclast) kind of spaced out of the group and forgot I had joined this blog. Sorry about that. To address Khozem and Mohammed's questions:

Challenges:

1. Getting work done by locals is hard. Things like opening a bank account can be very smooth, but may take a little bit longer than the US.

2. People don't really have the same professional approach to work. Work ethic is missing. It's hard to communicate to people that my time is valuable too. It's changing but slowly.

3. People have a "Chalta hai" kind of attitude which can be frustrating.

4. Traffic is bad. People simply don't know how to drive.

5. Roads are not made to accomodate pedestrians at all.

6. The terrorism issue is becoming a big factor.

7. Companies don't understand that the work force here isn't as talented as it might seem on the surface. Expectancy is high and delivery is usually lower quality and quantity.

8. A person who's worked for 2 years in the US and another person who's worked 2 years in India, simply cannot be compared in terms of their work knowledge or their professionalism. Indian counterparts are way behind and mostly for the reason that they don't have the same type of opportunities available here and lot of job hopping is happening.

9. Finding a place to stay in can be challenging as the rates are quite high here. Apartments cost about the same here as in the US in the big cities. Rents are lower than in the US, but very high relatively speaking. In Hitec City, Hyderabad, a 3 bedroom apartment is going for about Rs 35,000/per month to Rs 50,000/-.
